The past few days have been incredible and incredibly unexpected. I traveled the Southern Tier with a documentary crew from Arkansas. they're making a documentary called Directing Democracy and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to talk about their thesis or not, because recently I found out people can search stuff and if I've talked about it it pops up in their google search. Cool but intimidating; the internet is the panopticon. Regardless, it's a cool project made by cool guys and you should check out their website http://www.directingdemocracy.com/ they're having problems with video on their website right now but are working to correct it as they're on the road.
I ran into one of these guys while I was riding my bike and he invited me to tag along for the day. the next day I was invited to tag along on a trip to Cazenovia and Utica, and they've decided to stay through the elections on Tuesday so I'll be working with them a bit more. Every chance I get I ask them about gear and their experience, and advice for me as a filmmaker, legal issues, money issues, etc. I even got to go out and shoot some stuff for them on my own camera while they were filming a meeting. [side note] I know "Achievement Unlocked" is sort of a trendy statement lately but I've gotten sucked in, so ... I'm going to use it
I watched Being Elmo and All.I.Can last week... I was impressed with Being Elmo though I feel too much of it was archive dependent and the narration in the beginning by Whoopi Goldberg was a little gimmicky. All.I.Can was basically a 75 minute music video with weak attempts at storyline and although beautiful, reused not only techniques and composition, but they reused exact shots! multiple times. I think they accidentally stumbled onto the wisp of an idea of an interesting style but they didn't utilize it very effectively or really commit to it.
I went to film 84 Riverside and discovered people living there which I was unaware of, so no filming got done, I need to get more consent (for peace of mind) before going through with wandering the property with a camera. (as a result I ran into the Arkansas crew)
I filmed the VINES intern, Natalie, at the first indoor Farmers' Market of the season, and that went well.
Someone gave me good advice today which will be my parting statement for this post.
