What Will It Take

12 Days, $6,753

We have twelve days left and Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Three Dollars left to raise. a surprisingly small number of people responded to the news coverage this project got. A handful, actually. So what is it going to take to reach my goal?
The hardest part of online fundraising is this: talking to people in person, over the phone, over the TV, through flyers, etc. hardly works at all. There is a gap in communication from when you tell them to when they can get to their computer and type in the web address you've given them Just so they can look at your campaign. The more steps it takes to get them to your page the less likely it is they will respond.

Talking: 1- Agreeing to talk with you  2- Listening  3- Remembering/writing down the web address  4- The time it takes them to get to a device with internet (people probably won't donate through their smartphones)  4- Remembering you when they finally do get to the internet  5- Being curious  6- Typing in your web address without being distracted by other things  7- Reading your campaign  8- clicking the "donate" button and filling out information

Flyers: 1- Taking the flyer  2- Not throwing it out  3- Sitting down and reading it for real  4- Not throwing it out (putting it somewhere they'll see it later)  5- Finding it later when they're near the internet  6- Re-reading  7- Typing in the web address  8- Reading your campaign  9- Clicking the "donate" button and filling out information

Phone: 1- Answering to a strange number  2- Not hanging up when you tell them it's for a cause  3- Listening  4- Writing the web address down  5- Getting to the internet  6- Remembering the call  7- Being curious  8- Typing in your web address  9- Reading your campaign  10- Hitting the "donate" button and filling out information

TV: 1- Watching the station you're featured on  2- Paying attention  3- Caring  4- Writing down/remembering the web address instead of just continuing to watch and having new information replace you  5- Being curious  6- Getting to the internet  7- Remembering you  8- Typing in the web address  9- Reading your campaign  10- Clicking the "donate" button and filling out information

NOT EVERYONE THAT LOOKS AT YOUR CAMPAIGN WILL DONATE! that's just a fact, so even if they do go through all the steps it is still unlikely that the average person will complete the last step of hitting the "donate" button and filling out their information.

If you contact them through the internet it takes fewer steps but there are so many adds everywhere on the internet that we've stopped clicking on links or supporting causes our friends tell us about so through the internet (e-mail, facebook, linkedin, etc.) is more efficient but still unreliable.

Moral: everyone is different and you really need to cater to individual needs if you want funding because individuals donate, a crowd does not.

On the bright side we are over half way there.
